It is well known that the best solution to learning English is to go abroad and immerse yourself in the culture. In what perspective? You have the choice! Studies, employment, expatriation, family, or partner. If you want to go abroad to learn English, don't hesitate! Embark on an adventure abroad in English to learn the language of Shakespeare. I give you 2 to 3 months to become almost bilingual with everyday English. But how do I go abroad to learn English? Where do I start? Do I go to work? And what if I don't speak a word of the language So many questions that we ask ourselves. Don't worry, here is a list of 7 techniques if you want to learn English abroad:

1.Integrate an internship abroad

Do you need to do an internship to validate your year? Why not do an internship abroad? As well as learning English abroad, it's a great stepping stone to your dream career or a great and exciting way to get an insight into different careers that interest you.

Double advantage of the internship abroad:

  • It’s a great way to show your future employers how independent and open-minded you are, gain valuable work experience and, of course, improve your language skills in the professional field. Oh, and let’s not forget to mention the confidence boost and the network of friends and future colleagues from all over the world that comes from interning abroad;
  • You can apply for state aid to finance your stay, which is not insignificant (in addition to earning money on site).

2.Study abroad

Why not enroll directly as a student abroad? I'm not talking about one semester, but 3-5 years of study to get a full degree. Going abroad to learn English as a student is a magical experience that will certainly set you apart in the job market. Moreover, as a foreign student without going through a university exchange system, you will have access to scholarships.

3.Take part in a university exchange

You don't see yourself abroad for more than 6 months to a year? Contact your school or university's foreign exchange service directly. You will find out the terms and conditions of your potential departure: length of stay, destinations, scholarships, etc. I am thinking in particular of the Erasmus program which has sent 4 million students to study throughout Europe since its creation 30 years ago! Ideal for learning English abroad and creating unforgettable memories without too much commitment.

4.Become an au pair

If you would rather integrate by working, there is a simple solution: becoming an au pair. “Au pair” is an expression used worldwide as is (in French) to designate a young au pair (male or female) who takes care of children as part of a cultural exchange. In exchange for looking after the host family's children, the au pair is provided with food and accommodation. Be careful, however, in most countries, an au pair must be under thirty years old. Contact with the family and total immersion are great advantages to learning English quickly and continuously. If you want to know more, I wrote an article on how to become an au pair.

5.Find a PVT

Looking after children doesn't appeal to you? Then find a PVT, the Working Holiday Programme. This programme allows you to travel while having the possibility of working on-site to finance your adventure, and of course, to learn English quickly and effectively. The PVT is a set of temporary visas that allow you to travel to different foreign countries while working there. In short, it is an opportunity to have a first experience abroad with complete immersion. In addition, it is relatively easy to obtain. And the conditions for obtaining it are almost the same from one country to another. If you want to know more, I wrote an article on the PVT.

6.Take a language trip

You don't have time to stay abroad for 6 months to a year because you are already working or studying in France? Treat yourself to a language break! A language trip is a stay abroad to learn a language. It is most often composed of a language course, accommodation, and a program of leisure activities and excursions. This language trip allows you, in addition to learning English abroad, to discover the country and the culture and to have fun. You can do this stay in several settings.

  • School framework exchanges between schools or correspondents;
  • Private stays;
  • Institutional programs (e.g. Socrates for European exchanges).

7.Opt for VIE

These 6 proposals do not fit with your vision of immersion abroad. I have one last card in my hand: international volunteering Go work in a French company established abroad. You will probably speak French and English, but it is a significant opportunity to enter the world of work with a (rather high) salary. Finally, you can also go and do some voluntary work by taking part in a volunteer project. This could be looking after elephants in Thailand, helping to build houses in South Africa, giving French lessons in Central America, etc. Perfect for going abroad to learn English for free while having a positive impact.

What is the best destination to learn English?

The one you want the most. If, of course, English-speaking countries are the most suitable for learning English abroad, it is possible to learn the language all over the world. Latin America, Africa, Asia, Eand urope, you are sure to speak English in your daily life. The key is to find the destination and travel plan that best suits you: studying in the UK, working in the US, being an au pair in Wanaka or New York, etc. Choose a destination that meets your needs and your plan. Whatever the technique, going abroad to learn English is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have. Not only will you improve your level, but, above all, you will have unforgettable adventures and meet incredible people.
